Company Artist with the Joffrey since 2016
Yumi Kanazawa was born in Tokyo, Japan. She began her training at the Lauridsen Ballet Centre in Torrance, California under Diane Lauridsen. After competing in the Prix de Lausanne in 2013, Kanazawa went on to study at the San Francisco Ballet School under the direction of Patrick Armand. She joined the San Francisco Ballet Trainee program in 2015.
During her time in the San Francisco Ballet School and Trainee Program, she performed in many ballets with the school, including those choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan, George Balanchine, and Helgi Tomasson. She performed with the main company in Natalia Makarova’s La Bayadère; George Balanchine’s Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet and Coppelia; Helgi Tomasson’s Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Giselle, and Don Quixote co-staged with Yuri Possokhov.
Since joining The Joffrey Ballet in 2016, Kanazawa has performed in many ballets and contemporary works including Wayne McGregor’s Infra; Cathy Marston’s Jane Eyre (Young Jane, Adele); Liam Scarlett’s Vespertine; Christopher Wheeldon’s Swan Lake, Commedia, and The Nutcracker; Yuri Possokhov’s Anna Karenina; Justin Peck’s Year of the Rabbit and The Times are a Racing; Jerome Robbins’ Glass Pieces; and George Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments.
