Company Artist with the Joffrey since 2016
Yumi Kanazawa was born in Tokyo, Japan. She began her training at the Lauridsen Ballet Centre in Torrance, California, under Diane Lauridsen. Kanazawa competed in the Prix de Lausanne in 2013. She went on to study at the San Francisco Ballet (SFB) School under the direction of Patrick Armand. After two years in the school, she joined the SFB Trainee program.
While in the school, she performed in many ballets including those choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan, George Balanchine, Wang Wei, James Sofranko, Ben Freemantle, Myles Thatcher, and the main company’s director Helgi Tomasson. She performed with SFB in Natalia Makarova’s La Bayadère, George Balanchine’s Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet, Helgi Tomasson’s Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and Giselle, and Don Quixote co-staged with Yuri Possokhov.
Since joining the Joffrey, Kanazawa has performed in ballets such as Wayne McGregor’s INFRA, Christopher Wheeldon’s The Nutcracker, Justin Peck’s Year of the Rabbit, Myles Thatcher’s Body of Your Dreams, Nicolas Blanc’s Beyond the Shore, Krystof Pastor’s Romeo & Juliet, Alexander Ekman’s Midsummer Night’s Dream and Joy, Lola de Avila’s Giselle, Jerome Robbins’s Glass Pieces, and Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments.
