Company Artist with the Joffrey since 2011
Alberto Velazquez began his ballet studies at the Alejo Carpentier Elementary Ballet School in Havana, Cuba. He then continued studying under Adria Velazquez at the Fomento Artistico Cordobés in Cordoba Veracruz, Mexico. Velazquez was the gold medalist in pas de deux and a finalist in the Youth America Grand Prix National Finals in 2006. He also received a scholarship to attend The Harid Conservatory. He performed for the 50th Anniversary Gala of the Spoleto Festival in Italy and the 12th International Ballet Festival in Miami, Florida.
Velazquez joined the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at American Ballet Theatre on full scholarship in 2008 and became a member of ABT II in 2009 under the artistic direction of Wes Chapman. His repertoire included roles in Don Quixote pas de deux, Black Swan pas de deux, Stars and Stripes pas de deux, Flames of Paris pas de deux, Le Corsaire pas de trois, Allegro Brillante, Interplay, Vivace Motifs, Pavlovsk, A Taste of Sweet Velvet, Barbara, and Ballo Per Sei.
Since joining The Joffrey Ballet, Velazquez has danced many classical and contemporary roles, including Prince Siegfried in Christopher Wheeldon’s Swan Lake; Romeo in Krzysztof Pastor’s Romeo & Juliet; Prodigal Son in George Balanchine’s Prodigal Son; Cavalier in Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker; Four Performers in Stanton Welch’s La Bayadère; and roles in Wayne McGregor’s Infra; Yuri Possokhov’s Don Quixote; William Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated; Edwaard Liang’s Age of Innocence; Kurt Jooss’ The Green Table; Jiří Kylián’s Forgotten Land; Twyla Tharp’s Nine Sinatra Songs; Jerome Robbins’ Interplay; Lar Lubovitch’s Othello; Vaslav Nijinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps; Christopher Wheeldon’s Continuum; Nicolas Blanc’s Evenfall; and Alexander Ekman’s Episode 31 and Tulle.
