In addition to an added weekend of performances, new to this year's program is the selection of a first-ever Chicago-based choreographer as a fifth candidate, set on the students of the Joffrey Conservatory Program, a preliminary training program for aspiring Trainee dancers ages 14 – 18.

A Look at the 2023 Winning Works

'Sweet Science' | Mike Tyus

"I thought it would be a really special opportunity to create a piece dedicated to my father and grandfather centered around boxing."

"Warmer" | Kameron Saunders

"I wanted to create an abstract work that paralleled what it would look like if love was at the forefront of every human interaction."

'Overture No. 7: Inter Nos' | Christopher D'Ariano

"This piece is really inspired by the relationship between a creator and their medium, more specifically a composer or conductor and their orchestra. I wanted to create a visual representation of that relationship."

'Momoda (Kiss Kiss)' | Natasha Adorlee

"Creating this piece, I have been thinking a lot about my own life. Recognizing my own impermanence here, what I can accomplish with the time I have here, and what kind of impact can I leave, and can I lead my life with vibrancy and joy and celebrate every single small win as it comes to me."
