José Carayol

Head of Studio Company and Trainee Program with the Joffrey Academy since 2020.


José Carayol is an international ballet master and judge. He received his ballet training with a full scholarship at the world-renowned Real Conservatorio Professional de Danza de Madrid in his native country Spain. He then began his professional career at the Ballet Carmen Roche and Victor Ullate Ballet on their national and international tours while he was mentored by Cuban stars Orlando Salgado and Marta García.

Such extensive training led him to many highly acclaimed roles with several European companies such as Ballet Iñaki Urlezaga, SemperOper Ballet, and the world-renowned Royal Opera House in London. His career took him all over the world performing and mastering his ballet repertoire: Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Coppelia, Don Quixote, Carmen, Paquita, Cinderella, amongst many others.

Carayol’s extensive knowledge in different ballet schools, techniques, and styles; and his attentive eye for detail, make him a desirable international master teacher, coach, and judge for many ballet schools and competitions. He is part of the reputable panel of judges at the Youth American Grand Prix (YAGP) and California Dance Classics and he also served as a guest teacher at numerous leading institutional ballet schools including Royal Ballet School, Orlando Ballet, and Cincinnati Ballet, amongst many others. Carayol has been internationally recognized for his work at several prestigious ballet competitions and under his guidance, his students have won the top awards at YAGP, Génee International Competition, and Music Center Spotlight.

Prior to joining the Joffrey Academy as Head of Studio Company and Trainee Program, Carayol had been a principal teacher at Los Angeles Ballet Academy and the head of their newest Conservatory Program, which provided a full training opportunity to the professional track students of South California.

Carayol continues his pedagogical and teaching practices further by constantly attending seminars and teaching courses at the Royal Ballet School and the American Ballet Theater. Additionally, he is a fully certified and affiliated teacher of the American Ballet Theater NTC and part of their ABT® Project Plie program, which aims to support diversity and inclusion around the country and spread his love for the art of classical ballet to the youngest generations.
