In January of 1928, the composer Maurice Ravel was set to travel on a tour to North America, only to find himself granting a request to compose a Spanish-flavored ballet score for his friend Ida Rubinstein, a Russian dancer and actress.

What followed was one of the most iconic compositions of contemporary classics, a theme that stands alone for its instrumental and harmonic genius. That theme is at the heart of Yoshihisa Arai’s Boléro, a new ballet inspired by Ravel’s deft score.

The Joffrey streams the world premiere of Boléro later this month. In the meantime, we’re pleased to present this uninterrupted livestream of Boléro rehearsal, an opportunity to see the creative process in action. Enjoy this window into the Joffrey.
