Mayor Emanuel Declares 10.18.17 Ashley Wheater Day

PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, the gift of dance has always united people of different backgrounds, cultures, and faiths by transforming lives and uplifting spirits through art, movement, and music; and

WHEREAS, renowned dancer, innovative teacher & advocate, and fearless leader Ashley Wheater realized this fact early on and has dedicated his life to practicing, promoting, and bolstering this disciplined art form; and

WHEREAS, born in Scotland and trained at The Royal Ballet School, Wheater forged a professional dance career spanning two decades filled with incredible milestones including earning the position of Principal Dancer with London Festival Ballet at just 20 years old; and

WHEREAS, soon thereafter, Wheater joined the Australian Ballet where he danced principal roles for three years before moving on to The Joffrey Ballet in 1985 at the invitation of Joffrey co-founder Gerald Arpino; and

WHEREAS, in 1989, he joined the San Francisco Ballet where he not only finished a remarkable dance career retiring in 1997 but also began a new chapter as Ballet Master and then Assistant to the Artistic Director; and

WHEREAS, since his appointment as Artistic Director of The Joffrey Ballet in 2007, Ashley Wheater has employed his passion for dance and penchant for people in leading the Ballet into an era of great success marked by award-winning programming, venerated dance education, provocative performances, and world renown; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure, Wheater has spawned visionary performance seasons while bolstering the Company's involved outreach and community initiatives; and

WHEREAS, for a bold, collaborative vision that uses dance to impact culture, community, and change, Ashley Wheater has garnered copious accolades such as the Boeing Game Changer Award, the University of Chicago Rosenberger Medal for Outstanding Achievement in the Creative and Performing Arts, and many more which also include being named Chicagoan of the Year in 2013; and

WHEREAS, simultaneously serving as Artistic Director for both the Company and the Joffrey Academy of Dance, Ashley Wheater's sterling commitment to enriching the dance canon and immeasurable contributions to improving our greater community can hardly be quantified; and

WHEREAS, as The Joffrey Ballet prepares to open an exiting 2017-18 season with the highly anticipated premiere of Giselle on Wednesday, October 18th, this year also marks the 10th Anniversary of Ashley Wheater's thoughtful leadership as Artistic Director, which the Company will celebrate all year long in tribute to a stellar legacy of service that has inspired an enchanting past and continues to inform a more vibrant future:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, RAHM EMANUEL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO, do hereby proclaim October 18, 2017, to be ASHLEY WHEATER DAY IN CHICAGO in acknowledgment of an extraordinary artist and arts champion, incomparable mentor and friend, and true Chicagoan.
